After an immaculate first phase of the U21 World Championship with victories against Kuwait (35-21), Costa Rica (52-21) and Brazil (27-19) in the group stage, Carlos Martingo’s team started the main round on the right foot, defeating Spain 33-31.
In a very balanced match, the neighboring country’s team went into halftime ahead 20-19, but in the second half the Portuguese team turned the game around, adding two more points and simultaneously eliminating Spain from the medal race.
Placed in Group 2 of the main round, Portugal has four points (carried over from the first phase with two), Faroe Islands two, Spain and Brazil zero.
The Faroe Islands and Brazil face off this afternoon, starting at 5 pm, while the National Team returns to action tomorrow at 2:45 pm against the Faroe Islands.
