French center Victor Wembanyama is set to sign one of the biggest contracts in NBA history, with expectations of a five-year maximum extension with the Spurs next summer.
According to ESPN analyst Bobby Marks, the contract extension is expected to reach $252 million (€213.124 million) over five years, with performance-based bonuses (All-NBA, Defensive Player of the Year, MVP, All-Defence Team) that could raise the total value to $303.3 million (€256.51 million). The negotiations are expected to be a formality, as the French center is the key player for the Texans and the cornerstone of their athletic plan for the next decade.
The formalization of the agreement is expected after July 6th. An important detail is that, due to the time he was sidelined due to injury and a blood clot discovered in his shoulder, 22-year-old Wembanyama was ineligible for such distinctions at the end of the 2024/25 regular season, meaning he cannot receive 30 percent of the salary cap in the first year of the extension, even if he meets the required criteria this year.
On the sporting front, the Frenchman continues his meteoric rise, with his second All-Star Game appearance, his first as a starter, last weekend at the 75th edition held in Los Angeles, also leading San Antonio in an impressive campaign in the Western Conference.
The numbers reflect his dominance: 24.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.7 blocks in 29 minutes of play, with 51.1 percent field goal accuracy and 36.3 percent three-point shooting.
At the same time, he is the only player in the NBA who combines more than 20 points, 10 rebounds, and at least 2 blocks on average, a factor that further reinforces the value of his imminent and “golden” contract extension.
