Benfica has issued a statement reacting to the 30-day provisional suspension imposed by the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Basketball Federation for allegedly attempting to assault the referee during halftime of the derby against Sporting last Saturday at the Estádio da Luz.
The Eagles even speak of a “persecution” of the Cape Verdean athlete.
Here is the statement:
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica vehemently contests and repudiates the 30-day provisional suspension imposed on its player Ivan Almeida. The punishment, unfounded, unfair and totally disproportionate when compared to other recent situations, can only be justified in light of an unacceptable and permanent persecution of the athlete.
At no time did Ivan Almeida attempt to assault the referee of the match, as confirmed by several witnesses.”
Sport Lisboa e Benfica does not accept this decision by the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Basketball Federation and will use all legal means to guarantee the player’s defense.
