Benfica came very close to securing a fourth set in the Champions League in a thrilling and high-level second set, but the Turkish team, the undisputed group leader, managed to thwart that ambition in a match where they were almost always superior.
In a match where they had their best opportunity to win a set in the second set, forcing the Turkish team to fight for the decision in extra points until 29-31, but with the score remaining practically tied, point by point, from 15-15 onwards, Benfica were beaten by the powerful Fenerbahçe 0-3 (20-25, 29-31, 17-25) in the 5th round of Group B of the Women’s Champions League.
The national champions thus suffered their third consecutive defeat in the group stage of the top continental competition, where they only managed to win against the Polish team Lodz (3-2), a match in which they won their only sets in the competition.
In the first round, the Benfica women’s team, who occupy the last position in the group led by Fenerbahçe with only victories, had been beaten in Istanbul also by 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-12).
