The former Danish international retired at the end of the Paris 2024 Games after winning the gold medal in the biggest rout in the history of the Olympic finals.

The Danish handball star, Mikkel Hansen, is the protagonist of a new campaign for the Danish Cancer Society.

Dedicated to all those whose lives are affected daily by cancer, the symbolic film shows the athlete, elected best handball player in the world three times before retiring just over a year ago, shaving his characteristic long hair as a gesture of support for the cause.

The campaign is based on the premise that “Everyone knows someone” who is fighting the disease, an idea based on the statistic that one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 75. The minimalist approach of director Naghmeh Pour seeks to convey a serene optimism, where silence and simplicity become vehicles of strength and meaning.

“Cancer doesn’t just affect the person who gets sick, it affects everyone around them. My father was diagnosed with cancer and, thankfully, he’s doing well today. Cutting my hair is my way of showing that we’re in this fight against cancer together,” explained the former Danish international.

“The film is about recognition and hope. My intention was to create a moment that felt genuine, where you could feel the human being, Mikkel Hansen, and not just the athlete. The handball court is part of Mikkel’s story, but here it creates a visual and symbolic contrast. It’s a place we normally associate with strength and performance, but here it becomes a silent and dark space that allows Mikkel to present himself as a person. His personal connection gave the film the authenticity I was looking for,” explained the director.

Mikkel Hansen ended his career at age 37 with the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, adding to his silver medal from Tokyo 2020 and gold from Rio 2021. World champion, he scored 1350 goals in 266 games for the Danish national team.
