San Antonio Spurs basketball player Luke Kornet has strongly criticized the Atlanta Hawks for planning a tribute to a strip club, calling for the cancellation of the initiative.
The controversial marketing stunt is scheduled for March 16th, during the game against the Orlando Magic. The initiative involves a tribute to a nightclub, described by the Hawks in an official statement as an “iconic cultural institution,” and includes the sale of themed merchandise.
In a statement released Monday night, Kornet expressed his opposition and surprise, shared by other league members, regarding the Atlanta team’s decision.
“I and other league members were surprised and opposed to the Hawks’ decision. We want to provide an environment where fans of all ages can come and enjoy basketball safely and where we can celebrate the history and culture of communities with a clear conscience.” “Promoting a strip club is not aligned with that vision,” the player said.
Kornet also highlighted the difficulties faced by many women in the adult entertainment industry.
“Regardless of how a woman enters the adult entertainment industry, many in that environment suffer abuse, harassment, and violence that they should never be subjected to. I would like to encourage the NBA, its owners, employees, and fans to demand a higher standard from the Atlanta Hawks regarding what they consider worthy of being promoted,” he added.
As of Wednesday morning, neither the Atlanta Hawks nor the NBA had issued any comment on Luke Kornet’s appeal.
