The Reds were winning by two goals, but not only did they allow Liverpool to equalize before halftime, they also saw Real Madrid relentlessly dominate the second half.
What a game. What a night. What emotion. Real Madrid humiliated Liverpool at Anfield this Tuesday, in a game where the Reds were winning 2-0 but ended up losing 2-5, in a rematch of last season’s Champions League final. The quarter-finals of the prestigious competition are within reach for Real Madrid.
The game couldn’t have started better for the Reds. Early on, Darwin Núñez shone with a backheel that surprised everyone, leaving Klopp’s team smiling after only four minutes of play.
The truth is that Liverpool didn’t take long to celebrate again… but Courtois was to blame. At the end of the first 15 minutes, the Belgian goalkeeper invented a play, slipped, and couldn’t prevent Salah from taking advantage of the misfortune to extend the lead.
Anyone watching a team start so well with a two-goal advantage would hardly imagine that such an advantage would be lost, much less in a rout. But that’s what happened…
In the 21st minute, Vinícius Jr. danced inside the penalty area and, with a well-placed shot, reduced the deficit at Anfield, pointing to the symbol in the celebrations.
The Brazilian’s second goal came before halftime and, surprisingly, with an unfortunate own goal… by Alisson. The Reds’ goalkeeper didn’t want to be outdone by Courtois’ mistake and gifted the goal to the Madrid forward in the 35th minute, leaving the game at an (even more) ‘crazy’ pace heading towards halftime.
If the first half was stunning, what can be said about the second… Right after returning from the locker rooms, Real Madrid staged a comeback that was almost predictable, with Militão finishing off a set piece taken by Modric in the 47th minute.
