Volleyball player Sam Deroo discovered during a routine check-up that he has cancer. The news, which no one wants to hear or give, was confirmed by his club – Lokomotiv Novosibirsk.
The Belgian Sam Deroo discovered during a routine check-up that he has cancer, and Russian volleyball, where he plays, and world volleyball have united to support the athlete.
“Following a routine check-up, Sam Deroo was diagnosed with cancer and will undergo chemotherapy. Our contract with the player remains valid and he continues with the team. All our thoughts are with Sam and we pray for his recovery. Together, we will fight this disease,” reads the statement from Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, the Russian club the athlete represents.
Sam Deroo, who was born in Beveren 33 years ago, had his cancer detected during a routine club check-up. The outside hitter started playing in Roeselare, and later represented Modena and Verona in the Italian league.
The volleyball player also played for the Polish teams Zaksa and Resovia, and in Russia he represented Dynamo Moscow and Zenit Kazan.
Deroo has represented the Belgian national team since 2011, and in recent seasons he has also been the team’s captain.
