Immediately after the conclusion of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai, which culminated in Daniil Medvedev’s title win, the situation in the region changed radically. The reason was the launch of missiles from Iran against the territory of the United Arab Emirates, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the main targets.
Authorities immediately closed the airspace and suspended operations at the international airport. This measure left several of the tournament’s key players stranded in the country. Among them are the champion Medvedev himself, finalist Tallon Griekspoor, and Daniil’s compatriot, Andrey Rublev.
The situation doesn’t only affect singles stars. The list of stranded tennis players also includes doubles players, as well as members of the organizing team and accredited journalists.
In the last few hours, dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones have been intercepted in the skies over the emirate. Last night, residents’ mobile phones in the region received an attack alert, which activated security protocols. Local authorities are appealing for calm and assuring that the city is safe, but normality still seems distant. Following the recommendations of their embassies, the players remain in their hotels with their bags packed. They are all waiting for the opportunity to leave the country as soon as commercial flights resume.
This situation directly affects the sporting calendar. The draw for the main draw of Indian Wells – the first Masters 1000 tournament of the season – is scheduled for this Monday. It is still unclear whether some of these tennis players will be able to reach the United States in time.
One of the players who managed to leave the area literally at the last minute was Alexander Bublik. The Kazakh is already on his way to the USA to participate in Indian Wells. On his Telegram channel, he explained that his team left Iranian airspace immediately before the latest airstrikes.
Bublik was quick to reassure his followers, guaranteeing that all members of his team are safe, given the growing tension in the Middle East.
